The Difference Between Dogs and Cats. . .

  • A dog thinks: Hey, these people I live with feed me, love me, provide me with a nice warm, dry house, pet me, and take good care of me...They must be gods!

  • A cat thinks: Hey, these people I live with feed me, love me, provide me with a nice warm, dry house, pet me, and take good care of me... I must be a god!

All Hail Bastet!

A Cat's Prayer to Bast

Pitter patter of little feet, I pray to Bast my soul to keep. If I die within my house, I hope I got that little mouse! Catnip, yarn, milk and naps, may humans always provide us laps. Oh Bast hear my call! (You always do when I fall.) Beautiful Bast, purr me to sleep, for you, a dead bird at your feet! Meow. (Translation: Amen)
May the gates of Cat-Heaven let me in and out, in and out, in and out, in and............

Statue of the Goddess Bast

An Egyptian cat-goddess who protected all cats and the family unit, especially fertility and children. She was often prayed to in ancient times when a woman was giving birth for protection. A cat in the house was deemed good luck and a highly respected family member. When the family cat died, the family would shave their eyebrows in mourning.
She also represented having a good time by indulging in the pleasures of life. Her cult was very popular as you can imagine. Celebrations of sex, food, drinking (and naps!) were held in Her honor. Think of a well pampered cat and the life of luxury they lead.

The Egyptians knew cats were very useful to have around. Egyptian painting of a cat killing a snakeCatching mice and killing snakes was a very good thing if you worked in the fields. Soon they became more than just useful, they became sacred. It was a stoning offense to kill a cat, even accidentally! They mummified hundreds of cats, knowing they would see they're beloved kitties in the after life.
