Clerks
|
I bow to the master, Kevin Smith, for creating
one of the most brilliantly written movies
ever made.
Clerks was made on a shoestring
budget, with Kevin's friends for actors
and all in black and white film. However,
the man is a freakin' genius when it comes
to volatile, intelligent content and colorful
metaphors.
Nary a special effect to be found, buy
this movie if you're sick of big boats sinking
and asteroids pummeling the earth and crave
some brilliant writing for once.
It is one of the funniest movies ever made,
but probably one of the most vulgar, too,
so watch it if you're easily offended.

Braveheart
|
Written about my ancestor, William Wallace,
played by Mel Gibson (melt!).
Breavheart has it all. Great characters,
kick ass battle scenes with casts of thousands,
intelligent writing, well researched, great
lines.....and Mel in a skirt. ;-)

Far and Away
|
<pun> Far and Away the best
romantic adventure ever made.</pun>
(nerd humor, sorry)
Forget the English Patient - this ain't
no chick flick. Starting out in 1800's Ireland,
Tom Cruize and Nicole Kidman escape to America
for a "better" life.
A classic tale of poor boy/rich girl hit
it off in only the way the Irish do - with
lots of fire and wit. A great story, historically
accurate, fun, romantic...what more do you
need?

Mimic
|
Good horror is hard to find. Even with
good horror movies, I find myself rating
them with lower standards than I do other
genres of films. So why do I love them so
much? Can't say, but I just do.
Mimic takes an intelligent look
into mankinds' meddling with nature. Big-ass
scary bugs infest our underground railways.
They evolve rapidly and develop the perfect
camouflage to snare it's prey - us. Sound
hokey? Maybe a smidge, but it's well acted,
well written and the special effects rock.

Tremors
|
God, I love this movie! Tremors
is just a lot of fun.
It's well acted and no one does any of
the typical stupid classic horror things.
No ditzy blonde running away from the monster
here. The female lead is the smart one!
The men are quick learners, though.
Great characters! Very likable. Even monsters
are very cool and the effects aren't over
done. Good stuff!

Return to Innsmouth
|
A masterpiece of an independent Lovecraft
film. Return to Innsmouth by Aaron Vanek
is a great "what if...?"
companion piece to H.P. Lovecraft's The
Shadow Over Innsmouth.
Even if you've never the read the story,
this film stands alone. A 'must have' for
the serious Lovecraftian fan.

The Blob
|
You may think me a heathen for liking this
newer version of The Blob rather
than the classic, but you'll get over it
when you see it.
It's sorta Rebel Without a Cause meets
alien slimy thing that can kick your ass,
but a lot of fun none the less. Strong female
lead, too, which surprised me!
Awesome, nasty monster-slaying-humans
indiscriminately scenes. Even a kid bites
it in this movie. That never happens nowadays!
I must say my bias towards H.P. Lovecraft's
shoggoths may have tainted me a bit
on this one.

The Mummy
|
Yet another classic wonderfully modernized!
I loved EVERYTHING about this movie! The
acting was great, the characters were well
thought out, the writing was brilliant,
the effects were amazing and they even paid
attention in Egyptology 101!
It's well on it's way to possibly becoming
my all time favorite movie.

Suicide Kings
|
This will be the best movie you've never
heard of.
Suicide Kings, starring Christopher
Walkin and Dennis Leary, is a wonderfully
written character study. Rich kids try to
pull off get rich quick scam by trying to
kidnap a Mafia boss. All the characters
are entertaining and believable.
Darkly humorous, I got a big kick out
of this highly under rated movie.

Saving Private Ryan
|
Damn.
Saving Private Ryan was nothing short
of unbelievable. The best war movie ever
made. I'd even say close to one of the best
MOVIES ever made.
|
|

Starship Troopers
|
Woo hoooo! This movie was just a pure adrenaline
rush! Comic book style action/adventure
that was NOT cheesy like Batman.
It did it's best to capture the flavor
of the book. Not perfect, but close.
Regardless, it had lots o cool alien bugs,
social commentaries and gratuitous violence.
Vast quantities of heroics and big guns.
Not badly written either! ;-)

Captain Blood
|
Have I mentioned I love Swash 'n Buckle
yet? No? Well, get yourself a copy of Errol
Flynn's Captain Blood!
First off, it's Errol Flynn. I could stop
there.
There is something about those old 1930's
classics I just adore.
Doctor turned dashing pirate due to war
politics and a good measure of romance and
violence.
Blades clash, candles are cut, canons are
fired - all the while Flynn with his haughty,
devilish smile that makes me want to swoon.

Bugs Bunny Wartime Cartoons
|
Anyone who knows me knows I'm a huge
Looney Tunes fan.
These cartoons were not made for kids!
I have grown to appreciate the wit and intelligent
humor that was made just for adults back
in the 1930's to 1950's.
This video, Bugs and Daffy Wartime
Cartoons has cartoons I guarantee you
have never seen (and never will see) on
the Saturday morning line up.
Full of sexual innuendoes, racial remarks
and graphic cartoon violence. Definitely
adult themes, but it's so goddam funny!
(ya, I'm a sick chick) ;-)

Weird Al's UHF
|
Buy or rent 'Weird Al' Yankovick's UHF
now! It's an absolute scream!
I laughed so hard in parts, I was in tears!
The man is insane, the characters are twisted,
and the story is actually good!
You will marvel at the Master of Spoof
and laugh until you die!
